Gist: REPORT ON RESUMPTION OF ACADEMIC ACTIVITIES
The Lagos State University, as a result of the Coronavirus (Covid-19) Pandemic decided to shut down the University on 19th March, 2020 with the University Senate’s ratification of same in line with the Federal and State Governments directives on total lockdown. This was in compliance with the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) guidelines on the prevention and curtailment of further spread of the deadly disease.
The University Senate following the directive of the State Government through the Special Adviser on Education as a result of the relaxation of the restriction order on lockdown by the Federal and State Governments that, the University should advise the State Government on Strategies for reopening of the University to students, decided to deliberate on strategies for preparation for the re-opening of the University in anticipation of a further directive from the State Government. The Senate and other relevant bodies of the University met at various times through Virtual Meetings to deliberate and consider all the available options to have a hitch-free gradual reopening of the University in compliance with all the necessary guidelines on the Covid-19 Pandemic, particularly on social/physical distancing, wearing of face masks and regular hand washing.
Senate as the highest academic decision making body of the University with maximum capacity attendance met virtually on three (3) occasions through Zoom on:
Friday, 22nd May, 2020;
Monday, 8th June, 2020; and
Monday, 15th June, 2020.
The decisions taken at these meetings and other fora had culminated in this report tagged “The Roadmap for the first phase of Gradual Resumption of Academic Activities”. The University Management, Committee of Provost, Deans and Directors, Security Unit, the Health Centre and other major Bodies/Committees of the University had also met at different times to deliberate and consider necessary measures for the resumption of activities as it pertain to their various Departments and Units.
The University Senate in consideration of all the available options had decided to have the resumption in phases, beginning with the final year students, so as to ensure total compliance with Covid-19 safety measures as spelt out by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) and as emphasized by both the Federal and State Governments.
All these measures are hereby put together and presented to Lagos State Government for consideration.
